Yoga FAQs

Here are some of the more frequently asked questions about Yoga:

+ What do I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes that you can easily move and stretch in safely, nothing too loose and baggy which may get caught whilst moving. You decide on what you feel most at home in.

I suggest wearing layers on the top as it can get warm during our practice, nothing too loose and baggy which may get caught whilst moving. Yoga is practised barefoot (unless it’s a super cosy class like Yin Yoga). In savansana it is best to wrap up warm as the muscles cool quickly, so bring a jumper, socks and small blanket to wrap up.

+ Do I need to bring my own mat or equipment?

I recommend you bring your own mat if possible, for hygiene reasons.

If you practice with a blanket, eye pillow, strap or block, feel free to bring these with you.

For Yin & Yoga Nidra practice please bring your own blanket (s), cushions and bolster if you have one to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

I have some mats available to borrow on a first come first serve basis, these are cleaned regularly.

If you would like to purchase your own mat, I can suggest brands, please contact me for more details.
What happens in class? Please arrive at least 5-10 minutes before the start of class to settle in and 15 minutes early at your first class to fill in the health / registration questionnaire.

Generally speaking each class will include pranayama (breathing exercises) to start , then a warm up, a series of postures (asanas) and them a cool down and ending with savasana (relaxation or yoga nidra (yogic sleep – a sort of guided meditation).

The class may also include some yoga philosophy teaching and some chanting (you don’t have to join in if that makes you feel uncomfortable) .

+ Do I need to be fit?

No, Yoga is for everybody! All abilities are welcome, poses are broken down and modifications are provided. If you are new to yoga, I suggest joining a beginner’s class or even having a few 1:1 sessions to find your rhythm at your own pace. More dynamic classes such as vinyasa and ashtanga are energetic and more stamina is needed. Yoga also compliments many sports.

+ I am not flexible - can I do yoga?

Yes – of course! Yoga is for everybody, no matter how flexible. Yoga enhances flexibility; it’s not a prerequisite to the practice. So, if like many of us, you’ve got tight shoulders, hamstrings, hips, quads…yoga will really help. Be present and work with the body you have today. It doesn’t matter how deep you can go with the posture, the practice helps to unravel the body, over time flexibility will come. “Yoga is not about touching your toes, it is what you learn on the way down.”

+ What if I have an injury or condition that might affect my ability to participate?

While yoga has been proven to benefit conditions ranging from sports injuries to chronic illnesses, please do let your me know if you have a condition you might need to work around. Try to tune in to your body and listen to how you feel. This will help you become aware of what your body is telling you. If you have an injury, having one to one sessions to have a dedicated yoga practice tailored to your condition can be very beneficial. If you have had recent surgery, please contact me before booking.

+ Should I eat or drink before I come to class?

It is recommended to refrain from eating for 1-2 hours before a class, but it’s a good idea to drink plenty of water right up until the start.
